Summer 2010 with the Beavers! : 7/26/2010

I guess you've been wondering what the Beaver scouts have been up to lately!

Well when summer came along with it came the Beginning of Summer party where all the Beavers had a chance to show their friends what two hours with us leaders is like, and then came summer camp where all the Beavers attended for some fun in the sun. everyone had a great time making crafts in the camp site, playing water games and digging in the sand!

The colony has also unofficially welcomed six new  potential Beaver scouts after eight old Beaver Scouts moved on to Cubs last April. Ten more will be moving on in October and so the six new young ones will be replacing them.

It's been two years since we started Beaver Scouts in Xaghra, and as we are beginning to see them move on it seems like yesterday we even started!

A Busy Summer! : 7/25/2010

Till now Xagħra Scout Group has had quite a busy summer! We have organized our Group Summer Camp in early July, and we will be uploading photos from this even soon. Meanwhile we thank everyone who attended our Fundraising BBQ & Campfire during our Camp. Meanwhile all the other sections are busy either having beach meeting and enjoying the sun, while keeping at heart the scouting spirit. Also a/ ABSL Julie Sultana also participated in a YiA project at Poland with the title “Your Green Europe” along with other youths chosen by our Local Council, thus showing our loyalty at “creating a better world” and environment.
While I am typing this email, a/ ASL Sabrina Portelli is celebrating her scouting spirit with scouts from all over the world at EURO MINI JAM 2010 which is taking place in Iceland. Below is a photo of her with the Maltese Contingent. We hope she enjoys her last days at this international experience and that more scouts from our group may have the opportunity to do so in the future.

Troop Report - April 2010 : 1/7/2010

4th - 6th April 2010 – Easter Camp

On Easter Sunday morning, the troop arrived at the campsite at 8.30am and the flag break took place. Afterwards, an instruction about knotting was done and everyone practiced the knots that they had been taught. An instruction about tent pitching was also held on Sunday and the troop pitched two ridge tents, one to sleep in it themselves and the other for the leaders. After the tents were pitched and everyone was settled in their tents, inspection was done so that no food or electronics were in the tents. In the evening, after dinner, a game of match 4 was played with the troop leaders and scouts taking part.

On Monday morning, another inspection was done by the troop leaders. After breakfast, we set on a 2 hour hike to Marsalforn. After this hike, a pioneering project was held. This consisted in creating a gate to place in the entrance so that unwanted visitors were kept away from our campsite. In the afternoon a mapping instruction was held and some preparations for the campfire which was to be held in the evening. After dinner, everyone gathered around the campfire and an hour of singing and skits took place where everyone had a lot of fun.

On Tuesday morning, an inspection was done and the troop packed everything in their bags to be ready to go back home in the afternoon. At 9am we set on a hike to Ramla where we played volleyball and dodge ball. On our way back to the campsite we passed from a valley unknown to many of us. As soon as we arrived back at the campsite we had lunch and soon afterwards the parents began to come to pick the troop from the campsite. Everyone was so exhausted but happy that this camp was another success =D

Pack Report - April 2010 : 5/26/2010

The month of April was very hectic for cub scouts as they had the much anticipated Easter camp and the unique experience of meeting the Pope.

On Monday 5th the cubs met at 8:30 near Pergola farmhouses for the start of the Easter camp. The leaders prepared a lot for the camp to be successful. The camp had a space related theme: “Off to Space”. The cubs had the opportunity to work as a six in all the activities, gaining points with every achievement; with the aim of winning the Six of the Camp Award. The most loved activities were the Water Rocket activity, Preparing Skits, a hike and a “Off to Space” Costume Competition. After two exiting days full of fun and learning, it was time for cubs to go back home. Reluctantly the cubs waved goodbye to the leaders and headed home with their parents.

On Saturday the 10th of April the XSG celebrated a historic day as the first beavers joined the pack. In the going up ceremony the colony leaders bid farewell to the children while the cub leaders welcomed them to the pack. The newly invested cubs are: Luca, Christine, Rosie, Michaela, Jacob, Daniel, Carlos and Francesco. As cub leaders we hope that these cubs have a wonderful experience with the Xagħra pack. Meanwhile we waved our goodbyes as Herman, Owen and Matthew left the Pack to join the Troop.

On Sunday the 11th of April, the cubs woke up early to cross over to Malta to celebrate the feast of the patron Saint of all scouts- St. George. Before the parade the XSG had the unique opportunity to take part in the Mass celebrated by the archbishop in the co-cathedral of Saint John.

On the 17th, another unique experience was awaiting for the cubs as they had the opportunity to go to Saint George’s square in Valletta to meet the Pope. The sheer enthusiasm was evident on every cub’s face as the majority of them never had the opportunity to meet the Pope before. The climax of this meeting was when the Pope appeared in the gallery and all cubs sang happy birthday to celebrate the Pope’s 83rd anniversary.

The tender paw had their first meeting as cub scouts. The meeting covered the Cub Scout promise and law and how these should be put into action. Every scout has the duty to know the scout promise and has to abide to it. Meanwhile during this meeting, Akela had a small meeting with their Parents to explain to them how the Pack runs.

On Friday the 23rd, the Easter dinner was held at l-Ankra restaurant. Events like this help raising funds to the XSG while dining like one big family. All the cubs and leaders had a wonderful time chatting and laughing while eating the delicious meals.

On the 24th, the tender paw had a session on helping others in the community. The silver arrow had a meeting on safety at sea while the gold arrows were taught on cloud formation. Cloud formation allows us to predict the weather for that particular day.
