Colony off to Popeye`s Village : 8/2/2010

The big day arrived, and for a change the weather took mercy on us. Our islands were showered not with drops of rain but with rays of sun. A perfect day for a long planned outing had emerged. At 8.30am sharp the colony together with some of their parents stood waiting at the Gozo terminal for the beginning of their adventure. They were off to Popeye village!

On their arrival, the Beavers cartoon hero sprang to life as they were greeted by Popeye himself. This was followed by some information regarding the village as Popeye and Olive showed them around. Through the fun and learn package, the Colony learnt about safety at sea. They were given information about what to do in any case of emergency regarding the previously mentioned subject.  It was very educational and the Beavers involved themselves in every activity put forward by Popeye and Pluto. Afterwards, off they left to enjoy the rides that Popeye village is famous for. Surrounded by such attractions, the Beavers had the time of their lives choosing and deliberating which ride they should take. But one must also add that even the parents had their own share of amusement as Popeye`s assistant proved out to be one of those naughty sailors. Infact, he didn’t leave their side...until a mum found out his weakest point – grasshoppers!

It was a day to be remembered. Beavers, parents and leaders had fun alike ;) Infact everyone is looking forward for our next outing!

During this camp various activities took place including tournaments in chess, checkers and table soccer together with bowling and tennis on the Wii all weekend long. On Saturday a cooking competition took place where all the patrols were given the same ingredients and they had to work together to come with ideas on what to prepare in the allocated time. On Saturday night a lesson on self defense was given.

16th January 2010Survival Techniques
Today, the troop had an instruction on survival techniques and what should be kept in a survival kit. After the instruction each patrol were given some wood and they had to light a fire which can be used in case of emergency to keep them warm.

23rd January 2010Technology and Communication
Today’s meeting was held at the Xaghra Local Council’s premises since we had to use the service of the internet. The scouts were informed about various scouting websites namely ScoutKeeper and ScoutFace. They had to create an account with both the above mentioned websites. Afterwards, two competitive but fun games were carried out. We would like to thank the Xaghra Local Council for giving us access to use their internet.

30th January 2010Cookout

After the instructions each patrol had to build a fire and afterwards burgers and bacons were cooked on the fires that were built. Troop Report - December 2009 : 4/2/2010

5th December 2009Cooking
Today, the troop prepared a three course meal which consisted of a Maltese platter as a starter, chicken in mushroom sauce with rice as a main course and as dessert a fruit salad was prepared. Those present were distributed into groups and each group had to prepare one of the dishes. The end result was a delicious meal which all scouts and leaders enjoyed.

12th December 2009Pioneering
Another pioneering project was organized for the troop. Today’s activity consisted of building a camp table while divided in patrols and points were given out according to teamwork, knots and the strength of the table. The Eagle patrol ended with an advantage because the knots were better and the table was stronger.

19th December 2009Games
Today was the last meeting of the year 2009 and we had a different kind of meeting. Instead of an instruction and an activity associated with it, a meeting full of games was organized. Various games were played including touch rugby and ‘werqa’. Everyone participated in these games and tried his best to win the games but only one winner could win each game. However all scouts had a lot of fun in this meeting and that is what really matters.

Solidarity with Haiti : 1/18/2010

Solidarity with Haiti : Call for international donations

Geneva, January 14th 2010 – After the violent quake which struck Haiti, World Scouting is mobilising in order to help the 30,000 Scouts of Haïti so that they can come to the aid of the stricken population. In the name of World Scouting, a message of solidarity and compassion, was sent to Haitian Scouts, even though it is very difficult to get into contact with them for the moment. A volunteer cooperation specialist from “Scouts et Guides de France” (Scouts and Guides of France) is on site in Port-aux-Princes, to support the coordination of the international Scout aid.

A precise indication of what the needs are of the stricken families in terms of goods of first necessity, has been made possible thanks to the contacts, although limited, that have been made at this time. In fact, the 30,000 Haitian Scouts are essential relays between the emergency NGOs and the local population. Their action during the hurricane of 2008, has shown their capacity to act efficiently in operations of clearing, cleaning, decontamination and also by taking care of children that have been left to their own devices, as well as by building emergency camps.

Support the International Scout Aid

You can support the International Scout Aid in two ways:

1. Make an emergency donation to the Haitian Scout Association.

A special account has been opened by the World Scout Bureau, guaranteeing the use of these donations. Food aid, hygienic products, medicine and materials of first necessity will be purchased by the Haitian Scouts in order to limit the cost of transportation and storage. The action will thus be safer and faster.

Send your donations to: World Scout Bureau - Haiti Solidarity
UBS - CP 2600 - 1211 Geneva 2 - Switzerland
IBAN : CH980024024039633710T
SWIFT : UBSWCHZH80A

You can also make an online donation.

2. Send your donations to support the rehabilitation and reconstruction period:

As in every humanitarian crisis, the emergency aid is followed by a long period of rehabilitation and reconstruction. The Haitian Scouts have had a long work experience with the United Nations System and other humanitarian entities, they will therefore be the natural partakers in the aid to their country's youth. They will need your help.

Send your donations to: World Scout Bureau - Haiti Solidarity
UBS - CP 2600 - 1211 Geneva 2 - Switzerland
IBAN : CH980024024039633710T
SWIFT : UBSWCHZH80A

You can also make an online donation.

Support International Humanitarian Aid

If you choose to support the action of humanitarian agencies, we recommend that you approach those that have been long standing partners of the Scout Movement ( Red Cross, UNICEF ) that are organised and who have the necessary infrastructure to coordinate the support to Haiti from your country. It is unnecessary to give or to attempt to send products or goods that are not of first necessity. Please refer to the requests made by emergency crews.

Pack Report - December 2009 : 1/12/2010

The month of December had only three meetings as both leaders and cubs had their Christmas holidays.

On Saturday the 5th and 12th of December, the silver arrow did some crafts. The children certainly liked doing the 3D sea box as the following meeting the majority of them handed in the complete version of the box. Some coloured the box from the inside and put several accessories to make it look more real. Obviously this activity helped the cubs to hone their creativity and imagination. A sense of accomplishment was also achieved as points were given to those that completed the task.

Some musical instruments were constructed in the following meeting which was on the 12th of December. Each cub was assigned to a group where the leaders demonstrated how to construct the instrument. There were four groups and each one had a particular instrument to construct. After the meeting every cub was happily playing the newly-constructed instrument; which was either a box guitar, a drum or a rattle.

The gold arrow cubs had to invent a Christmas-themed sketch in order to perform it in the Annual General Meeting which is going to be held on 9th January 2010. These sessions are very important for children to develop their acting skills and character. Apart from the 5th and 12th meetings, they made extra effort and met with Akela on a regularly basis to practice their play.

On Saturday the 19th, the pack went to Dar Pompeii, at Victoria, to sing some Christmas carol to elderly people. As cub scouts we emphasise the need for children helping the community. So, in this festive season it is fitting for the Xaghra Pack to visit these people and those that are taking care of them.
