Helping in Istrina 2009 : 1/5/2010 

Xagħra Scout Group, Gozo District, was one of the groups that vowed themselves to support L-Istrina 2009. On Saturday 26th December 2009, our scouters stayed several hours in our village’s main square where people donated money. Radju Bambina, the local parish radio station, also helped by broadcasting that we were collecting money for L-Istrina 2009. Meanwhile the energetic Xagħra Troop went around the village, knocking doors and collecting money. All Xagħra Scout Group members’ who participated in collecting Eur 392.70, were happy and full of pride to have kept at heart of the Scout Law namely that “A SCOUT'S DUTY IS TO BE USEFUL AND TO HELP OTHERS.

Troop Report - November 2009 : 12/23/2009 

7th November 2009Chess
A different type of meeting was held today where the troop learnt the rules of chess and how to play this game. Two chess players delivered the meeting to the scouts most of whom were eager to learn about this game so that they could compete amongst themselves.
 
13th November 2009Night Hike
This was the troop’s first over night hike. A route of around 17 kilometres was planned by the leaders. The departure point was our headquarters. Then we headed to RamlaBay, were we had a short break and observed some stars. We proceeded to the Nuffara hill, and to the heliport were we had some food. At around 23:30 we proceeded to the Victoria scouts’ Headquarters. We arrived at around 01:00, we played some table soccer and then we all went to sleep. At 04:30 we left the Victoria headquarter and began our journey back home. At 06:00 we arrived at our headquarters.
 
21st November 2009Mapping
Today’s topic was Advanced Mapping. The meeting commenced by the basic mapping skills including the map reading, bearing, and map reference. Afterwards, the troop was taught further mapping skills particularly the back bearing and following a route.
 
28th November 2009First Aid
Today, the troop had a first aid meeting where most of the basic first aid was covered so that in case of emergency during scouting activities or in their personal life, they would know how to come out of the situation.

Troop Report - October 2009 : 12/22/2009 

3rd October 2009Going-Up Ceremony
Today the troop welcomed 3 new members within it. Peter Joe Mifsud, Kurt Galea and Andre Sciberras. Both the troop and the pack were present for this ceremony. The cub leaders said the last goodbye to these scouts and the scout leaders welcomed them as part of their group.
 
10th October 2009Knotting and Lashings
Knotting is an important part of a scout’s life and today’s meeting dealt with some basic knots and lashings that are most commonly used by scouts mainly for pioneering projects. Teamwork was one of the main aspects that was clear in this meeting. Those who knew the knots helped the others who were not really good in the subject.
 
17th October 2009 – JOTA/JOTI
Every year an event known as Jamboree on the Internet takes place. This year the troop had the opportunity to participate in this event. The meeting started at 9.00 p.m. with a brief explanation on what is JOTI. Then the troop was divided into two and each group had a laptop and leader in charge. The troop succeeded in communication with other scouts troop in two ways, on air and through chatting. The meeting was adjourned at 10.30 p.m.
 
24th October 2009Pioneering
Today each patrol had to build a tripod with the knots and lashings that they have learnt about in previous meetings. Each patrol set to work on their pioneering project. From this meeting they learnt more about the use of knots and lashings in real life and why they are so important to a scout.
 
31st October 2009First Aid
A guest speaker from the Red Cross Gozo Branch, Mr Mario Saliba, was invited for this meeting. A short video on how Red Cross was founded was shown and afterwards a powerpoint presentation on some basic first aiding took place.

Troop Report - September 2009 : 12/20/2009 

12th September 2009Joint Activity with VSG
Today we met with the Victoria Scout Group’s Troop for a joint activity. ASL David Grech of Victoria organized some water games which all the scouts enjoyed taking part in.
 
19th September 2009Setting up of Patrols
Today, two new patrols were set up: the Tiger Patrol under the leadership of Juan Hili and the Eagle Patrol under Nicholas Frendo. Each patrol had to design a flag to be used to identify their patrol. Some games were then played.
 
26th September 2009Hike to Nuffara
For today’s activity, the troop set out for a hike to Nuffara. Along the way, we saw some beautiful scenery as we were walking up the hill. Once on top, we played some games before starting the descent down the clay slopes were the troop did some races up the slope. After that we went on our way back to Xaghra.
