November Cookout Report by Cubs : 12/16/2009

The Cookout by Joseph Rapa
Last Saturday we went to a cookout with our leaders. When we arrived at the place we began to find rocks. After we found all the rocks we needed, we put the rocks around the hole. Then we put a long stick in the middle of the hole. Other pieces of wood were placed against the one in the middle. One of our leaders then place some newspapers amongst the wood. One of our leaders set the wood on fire. When the fire was burning low, we cooked our sausages and noodles. In the mean time we played some games. We enjoyed our food and afterwards we cleared up the fire.

The Cookout by Herman Hili
Last Saturday 28th November, we met at our H.Q. and Akela told us we were going to a cookout.
When we went to the place we were going to make the cookout we were divided into groups. The groups were the Silver arrow with each other and ours the gold arrow into another group.
We enjoyed ourselves and we went to the rocks that where on the ground to make a circle for the fire. We looked where the wind was coming from and we took out a rock where the wind was blowing from. When the fire was ready to cook, we cooked bacon first, then sauseges, meat and noodles.
When it was time to go again to our H.Q.I was so sad that we were leaving from the cookout. liked the cookout very much, that I want to go for another one.

Pack Report - November 2009 : 4/12/2009

As promised, the month of November proved to be another successful month regarding the best thing we love doing-scouting.

On Saturday, 7th of November, the Silver Arrow cubs did some arrow work. The theme of this meeting was the compass rose. The children played several games related to bearings so that the learning process will be more enjoyable. It is evident that educational games help children getting the gist of what is being taught. Meanwhile the Gold Arrow Cubs learned about Basic Mapping and began preparing for this month’s cookout. By the end of the meeting all the cubs had a clear idea of what compasses and bearings are used for.

Saturday 14th November was an exciting day for all cub scouts as they were going to spend a day in Malta with the fellow cubs of Fgura. It is important for these children to mix with other scout groups and make new friends at this stage of their age. At around 7:30am all the Xaghra Cub Scouts were eagerly awaiting the ferry looking forward for a wonderful day ahead. Firstly, the cubs visited the Limestone Heritage in Siggiewi. The cubs were shown a small video to get acquainted with Malta’s heritage in stone followed by guided tour around the museum. A 5-kilometer hike to “Is-Salib tal- Gholja proved to be a bit challenging for the cubs as they dragged their way up the hill to enjoy the spectacular view of the island of Malta. Here, some games were played and one could easily notice that all cubs were easily integrating with each other especially during the games. At around three the XSG had to leave to catch the ferry. Reluctantly, both packs waved goodbye and invited each other to do another joined activity in the near future.

On Saturday the 21st of November the Silver Arrow cubs followed another topic as part of their arrow work regarding open fire lighting. Since the following meeting was going to be a cookout, it was sensible to teach the cubs how to prepare for an open fire. The cubs were told about the safety procedures and how to start a fire. Meanwhile the Gold Arrow cubs revised their mapping skills and fully organised next meeting’s cookout. Today, the cubs played a new game which was taught to them by the Fgura Scout Group the previous week.

In the last meeting for November (28th), a cookout was organised. Every cub brought food, drinks and all other necessary equipment. Today the meeting was scheduled to last for 2 ½ hours so that the cubs will have ample time to make an open fire and cook the food. The cubs were taught how to start a fire without the use of kerosene and so, only wood and paper were used. Finally everyone had great fun filling up their stomachs!

XSG International Relations : 11/26/2009

On Sunday 20th November 2009, Xagħra Scout Group was invited at the International Commissioners Forum to make a presentation on E-S.C.OUT hosted by the Scout Association of Malta and the Malta Girl Guides Association. The aim of this forum was to provide a venue for International Commissioners to share and gain information on the important roles they play within their Associations. The objectives were to introduce and share new challenges, to provide updates of key issues from regional and world perspectives, to provide an opportunity to enable every association to actively contribute to the sharing of information and to provide opportunities to network with others in an informal environment. 100 plus delegates coming from a number of different countries attended to this forum. Daniela Sultana, Project Manager, assisted by Loraine Borg and Josmar Azzopardi, presented a speech and a video about how did we apply and what we did during the E-S.C.OUT project.

On Saturday 21st November 2009 we had a visit by Andre’ Lopez, a Rover Scout from Brazil. [Andre' is in light blue uniform in the photos below.] He had made contact with our scouter Mario Agius through www.scoutface.com where he told him that he will be visiting the island as part of the International Commissioners Forum. Our GSL, QM and Mr. Agius toured Andre’ around Xagħra and also visited our Colony Meeting. Andre’ also returned back to Gozo on Tuesday where GSL and Q.M. took him around our amazing island of Gozo.

Pack Joint Activity Report by Cub : 11/24/2009

A Day in Malta with Fgura Pack on 14 November 2009 – Cub Scout Savio Galea

It was Saturday 14th November 2009 and it was a hot day. I and my cubs went to the harbour. We met each other at 7.45am. At 8.35am we got on the ship. After a couple of minutes we arrived in Malta. We saw our buses waiting for us.
We went to the limestone heritage. Their Akela came to say hello to us. We went to the limestone heritage. There was a man inside that told us what we would be doing that morning. After he explained, we went to see a film about limestone. The man divided us into two groups. I and some cubs were carving an nice swan on the stone. Then the man took us in another room. He gave us headphones. There was a big water fall. I think that it was about three storeys high.
In a corner there were some chickens, goats and some gold fish too. We had lunch there. Two of us went to catch the chicken but unfortunately we didn’t catch it. We were happy because we could sit on the grass. It was very hot in Malta. At about noon we hiked to a small hill [is-Salib tal-Gholja]. On our way we met a dog and we decided to name him gwida! We were very happy. We had some beautiful games. It was 3.35pm at we had to come back to Malta.

I WILL NEVER FORGET THE DAY THAT WE SPEND WITH THE FGURA PACK.
