End of school BBQ : 2/7/2009

A BBQ was organized to celebrate the end of school for the children on Monday 29th June 2009 . The leaders chose a Cowboys and Indians themed party and the children who were present for this BBQ were divided in two groups, a group representing Cowboys and another group representing Indians. Bandannas were given to the cowboys to distinguish them from the Indians who had their face painted. Games and singing were organized by the leaders and the children had a great time playing these games and thus ending their scholastic year in a Wild Western or Indian style.

XSG Carwash a success! : 2/7/2009

The Xagħra Scout Group organized a carwash as a fundraising activity for the group on Saturday 27 June 2009. The ventures and rovers together with the Troop and Cubs undretaking the Link Badge took part in this activity. Early in the morning two mess tents was set up so that cars could be washed under it. As cars began to line up all those present gave a helping hand so that the filthy cars emerged shining from the other side of the tent. Also a bake sale was held at the same time by the group where fruits and cakes were on sale. Some parents were also present and helped us wash the cars. 3rd May 2009 – Annual Parade
After all that marching along the streets of Xaghra training for the annual parade the time to show off what we had learnt was upon us! We caught the 8.15 ferry and made our way to Floriana where we marched from the Island Scout HQ to Valletta and back. It was the first time participating in the annual parade for all of the troop but it definitely won’t be our last!

9th May 2009 – Open Fire Cooking
Before today’s activity was undertaken the best scout award for the months of March and April was awarded to Christian Galea whose impeccable behaviour edged him past the stiff competition.

For the activity troop was divided into two groups, given some wood and an axe, with which they were to employ the techniques they had learnt to build a fire and to cook some hamburgers on. Both teams successfully lit a fire and also succeeded in cooking a delicious cheese burger! A special mention goes out to Juan Hili who succeeded in lighting his team’s fire using Swedish Fire Steel . For this activity the troop were joined by two Cub Scouts who are undergoing their link badge, Andre Sciberras and Peter Joe.

16th May 2009 – I.T and Technology

To fulfil one of the path finder criteria the troop must show some basic knowledge about technology and I.T. So during today’s lesson the troop showed us their skills in sending emails and using Microsoft Word on two laptops. Also present for this meeting was Cub Scout Andre Sciberras. The troop then wound down the lesson by playing Pantomimes, where the scouts have to mime a given situation, character, movie or book. The game was won by Nicholas Frendo whose acting and miming skills are worthy of an Oscar!

23rd May 2009 – Pitching a Hike tent
During this meeting the troop was larger the usual, as all gold arrow Cub scouts joined us. So the troop was divided in two patrols and after an instruction of how to pitch a hike tent. Both patrols competed against other, with the patrol that succeeds in properly pitching the hike tent in the shortest time winning the competition. While one patrol pitched the hike tent, the others did some ice breaker games to get to know each other better.
In the end, Nicholas’s Frendo’s patrol won the competition, due to team work and good behaviour.

30th May 2009 – Cleaning-up Xaghra
The Scouts together with the Cub Scouts did one of their many good deeds by cleaning up an area in our beautiful village. The spot chosen was near the steep road known as is-Sellum. This means that visitors to the cemetery and tourists admiring the amazing Citadel views can benefit from a clean environment. Once again the meeting took longer than usual as we met at HQ at 2pm instead of the usual 3pm. Also this meeting was done in a joint activity with the Xaghra Cub Scouts. In the photo below one can see the amount of rubbish that was gathered.
